Social Work Month 2026: Celebrating Excellence in Care and Service

March 6, 2026

Social Work Month is a time to celebrate the compassionate professionals who dedicate their careers to uplifting individuals, families, and communities. At GHR Healthcare, we are honored to work alongside social workers who embody this mission every day. Candidates like Amira Lewis and Andrea Solheim remind us of the profound impact social work makes—empowering families to rebuild connections, advocating for those in need, and fostering hope during life’s most challenging moments. Their stories highlight the heart of social work and the transformative power of empathy and dedication in creating meaningful change.

Meet Our Featured Social Workers

Amira Lewis, LMSW

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in social work, and how did your path lead you to your current role with GHR Healthcare?

A: When I first entered college to pursue my bachelor’s degree, I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to take. I interned with several organizations on campus; however, the one that stood out most was the Women’s Center. There, I shadowed a social worker who supported many young women in overcoming both internal and external challenges. Watching her passion and genuine care for others inspired me and helped me recognize that same desire within myself which is to support and uplift others in meaningful ways.

Q: Can you share a moment in your career that reminded you why social work is so meaningful and reaffirmed that you chose the right path?

A: Throughout my career, I’ve worked with diverse populations, including children and families. Witnessing individuals and families shift from feelings of hopelessness to actively addressing and resolving their conflicts has been incredibly reaffirming. I’ve seen families go from years of silence to taking accountability, recognizing misunderstandings, and rebuilding communication. Moments like those remind me why I chose this path.

Q: How has your work as a social worker influenced the way you connect with and support the people and communities you serve?

A: There’s a quote I often reflect on: “By changing nothing, nothing changes.” To me, social work represents change. It’s about instilling hope in individuals and fostering transformation within communities. My work has taught me to assess what is effective, what needs improvement, and how to adapt in order to create meaningful impact. It continues to fuel my passion for promoting the growth and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Q: In your experience, what qualities set apart a good social worker from a great one?

A: A great social worker does more than complete tasks, they have a genuine desire to create positive change. They listen with intention, empathize deeply, advocate fiercely, and encourage consistently. A great social worker ignites hope and empowers others to recognize their own strength.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in social work?

A: Your character and intentions will greatly influence your effectiveness in this field. Take time to evaluate your “why” when considering a career in social work. That purpose will sustain you and guide you through the inevitable challenges and obstacles you may face along the way.

Q: What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career, and how did you navigate it?

A: Working with homeless youth was one of the most challenging experiences of my career. Seeing their basic needs unmet and recognizing the limited support available to them was deeply moving. What helped me navigate this challenge was focusing on building strong support systems by connecting them to resources, mentors, and opportunities that could help them move toward their goals. I’ve had the privilege of seeing many of these young people pursue higher education, begin careers, and secure stable housing. Witnessing their growth and resilience reinforced my commitment to this work.

Q: As we celebrate Social Work Month, we'd love to know something fun about you outside your professional life. What's a hobby or interest that brings you joy?

A: Outside of work, I enjoy staying active; working out, riding my bike, and going for long walks. I also love spending time with my sister’s Yorkie, Glory. While she technically belongs to my sister, I like to think she’s mine! Taking her on walks and shopping trips always brings me joy.

Andrea Solheim, LMSW, QMHPR

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in social work, and how did your path lead you to your current role with GHR Healthcare?

A: My path in social work began when I took a position with Head Start as a Family Engagement Specialist, enrolling children and serving families. It was the perfect blend of my prior experience as a public school teacher and my love for walking alongside people to empower them, meet needs, and identify strengths.

Q: Can you share a moment in your career that reminded you why social work is so meaningful and reaffirmed that you chose the right path?

A: Meeting with a new client, sharing their space, listening, identifying goals together, and seeing the smile of being understood on their face is beyond rewarding.

Q: How has your work as a social worker influenced the way you connect with and support the people and communities you serve?

A: As a social worker, I am constantly reflecting on the whole person. I look at social determinants, basic needs, current symptoms, supports, strengths, and needed resources—everything! That’s what I love about social work.

Q: In your experience, what qualities set apart a good social worker from a great one?

A: I think the one quality that sets apart a good social worker from a great one is simply listening. Each client/person is so unique. I am drawn to the concept of intersectionality—understanding this makes all the difference.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in social work?

A: Shadow a social worker, ask questions, and be open to seeing the world through a justice lens—one that puts the client at the center of their story.

Q: What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career, and how did you navigate it?

A: One of the biggest challenges is being frustrated with systems. Macro social work is a great place to turn for this. Influencing legislation is essential.

Q: As we celebrate Social Work Month, we'd love to know something fun about you outside your professional life. What's a hobby or interest that brings you joy?

A: I love Golden Retrievers, playing the piano, and traveling!

Thank you, Amira, Andrea, and all social workers who dedicate their lives to helping others. We are inspired by your passion, commitment, and the meaningful impact you make every day—happy National Social Work Month!
